Can You Work While Rated 100% P&T by the VA?

Yes—Here’s What You Need to Know

One of the most common questions veterans ask is: “Can I still work if I’m rated 100% Permanent and Total (P&T) by the VA?” The short answer is: YES, you can—but there are important details to understand to protect your benefits and peace of mind.

Understanding 100% P&T

When the VA grants a 100% Permanent and Total disability rating, they’ve determined your service-connected condition(s) are both totally disabling and not expected to improve. This is a strong form of protection for veterans, meaning:

  • Your benefits are locked in for life (barring fraud or a very rare reevaluation).

  • You and your dependents may qualify for additional benefits like CHAMPVA, Chapter 35, and more.

  • You’re typically not subject to routine future exams.

But one thing it does not mean is that you’re prohibited from working—as long as you’re not rated 100% via Individual Unemployability (TDIU).

P&T vs. TDIU: The Key Difference

Here’s where confusion often arises. TDIU (Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability) is granted when the VA determines your service-connected conditions prevent you from working—even if your overall rating is less than 100%. If you are granted TDIU, working full-time can put your benefits at risk.

If you’re rated 100% P&T based solely on your schedular ratings (e.g., a 70% PTSD + 30% back = 100%), you can work without fear of losing your benefits.

So, Can You Work at 100% P&T?

Yes, you can. Many veterans rated 100% P&T continue to work, run businesses, or even pursue new careers. The VA does not penalize you for working if your rating is schedular and P&T.

What’s more, some veterans find that working again provides purpose, connection, and additional income—without compromising the benefits they’ve fought so hard to earn.

When to Be Cautious

The only time to proceed carefully is if:

  • You’re rated 100% via TDIU (this status depends on being unable to engage in substantially gainful employment).

  • You’re applying for TDIU and currently working—this may conflict with your claim.

  • You’re unsure whether your 100% rating is schedular or TDIU-based.
